About

Mary is a visual artist working within the fields of sculpture, drawing and installation. Her practice examines the relationship between B O D Y and W A T E R. She lives and works in Falmouth, Cornwall where life is deeply embedded in the transitory spaces of the shoreline. Regular sea swimming and pilot gig rowing fuel a fixation with water that seeps through to her visual practice. With an embodied approach to process, Mary’s work considers how the materiality of water can describe how we, as bodies, are connected to our environments and each other.

Mary makes objects that in some way evoke the body. She seems drawn to grotty and physically degenerate materials as they seem to define a collapse of something that was too perfect to be truly honest. These ‘grotty’ materials are often fused with lurid synthetic ones to expose their inert sincerity. Part of the process is to carry, hold, and care for objects she has formed to the point of collapse. These victims of the malfunction of (over)care are then crudely wrapped, protected, or stitched back together in an alarming attempt at nurture.
